What is PrP Facial Rejuvenation?
We all have platelets in our blood. PRP is 3-step procedure that involves having your blood:
Drawn from your arm
Placed into a machine that separates the platelets from the rest of your blood
Re-injected into you (only the part of your blood that contains a high concentration of platelets). This is the “vampire” part.
Orthopedic surgeons use PRP to help athletes recover more quickly after an injury. In dermatology, PRP is being used as treatment for hair loss. PRP may also speed up wound healing.
There is a copyrighted procedure called a Vampire Facelift which gets a lot of press - this procedure also includes a dermal filler treatment.
PRP is not a filler – it’s a regenerative treatment that involves harvesting the body’s own wound healing and regenerative growth factors to improve skin texture, as well as age-related changes like fine lines and laxity.
After an initial consultation appointment, a second visit is required for the actual procedure: Blood is drawn (just like a regular blood test) and then spun in a centrifugation system to separate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from the other blood elements. This is then injected with tiny needles into the superficial layers of the skin (called mesotherapy).
Platelet Rich Plasma is the most natural and safest, yet effective, treatment available on the aesthetic market right now to rejuvenate the skin especially the under eye area as facial and body areas. It is effective, natural and has minimal downtime.
PRP works by using your own platelet cells from a portion of your own blood, rich in growth factors and stem cells to regenerate and remodel the skin naturally increasing elasticity and collagen production. The skin is re-plumped and rejuvenated; fine lines and wrinkles are reduced to create a youthful, radiant glow.
PRP injections are hugely successful in the treatment of areas such as, crow’s feet, “crepey” eyelids, thinning hair, acne scars and wrinkles.
The beauty of having PRP treatment is that it uses your own blood; it contains no foreign or synthetic chemicals and therefore has no side effects. The result is smoother, younger looking skin. PRP treatment results continue to improve over a period of 6-12 weeks.
Most patients will require a course of 3 Platelet Rich Plasma treatments depending on area and condition being treatment. Treatments normally occur at 6-8 week intervals.
How does it work?
Normal blood contains only 6% platelets however, in PRP, there is a concentration of 94% platelets, which translates to a powerful growth factor “cocktail” with a variety of growth factors and cytokines. This stimulates cellular tissue regeneration to dramatically accelerate healing.
Although blood is mainly a liquid (called plasma), it also contains small solid components (red cells, white cells, and platelets). The platelets are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which are very important in healing injured tissue or damaged skin.
The previously mentioned growth factors are proteins that help to heal injured tissue or damaged skin. Studies have shown this technique to be highly effective in the treatment of skin wounds, particularly burns. When we inject the PRP into the skin, platelets release their growth factors which trigger surrounding cells to proliferate, in turn stimulating repair, increasing volume and rejuvenating the skin.
Most importantly, the growth factors contained in the plasma boost collagen production – the stimulation of collagen production results in new skin cells being formed and therefore an improvement in skin elasticity. Ultimately this creates a tightening effect on the treated area and enables patients to achieve a more beautiful, youthful skin.
PRP injections are injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss and/or wrinkles and provides a gradual increase in skin thickness. Visible results appear after the first treatment session but the activity of the stem cells in the plasma continues working for about 3 months after treatment.

what to expect from treatment?
Blood drawn: You would have a small amount of blood drawn from your arm (10 to 20 milliliters). Prior to your PRP treatment, you can have your skin numbed with a topical anesthetic for 30-40 minutes.
The test tube containing your blood would be placed in a medical device called a centrifuge, which separates your blood into layers. One of these layers contains a high concentration of platelets.
Blood injected: The area where the injections will be given will be cleaned with an antiseptic, and a local anesthetic will be applied on areas where injections will be made. Once the platelets are prepared they will be injected to your skin in small amounts using a very fine needle. Multiple injections will be needed. You may experience a sensation of tiny pin pricks and stinging sensations which will subside after a few minutes. Treatment is quick and very tolerable.
To give you immediate results, you may also chose to combine this treatment with filler.
You may have a bit of pain, bruising, and swelling afterwards but this will usually resolve in 24-72 hours. In cases where patients are prone to bruising easily, slight bruising may be evident, but as with any other filler, this is easily covered with make-up. Dr. Kelleher will give you specific post-treatment care instructions.
Recovery for this procedure is relatively minimal. You can go back to work the next day.
The entire procedure takes about 45 minutes to one hour.
There may still be some redness and other signs of minor irritation. You should avoid applying too many products to your skin.
Avoid alcohol-based products and exfoliants during the recovery stage. Sun exposure may also slow down your results.
Until your skin has completely healed, avoid rigorous activities that might cause excessive sweating and heat production. Sweating may cause additional irritation and rigorous activities may increase the risk of swelling or bruising. This usually should be avoided for at least 72 hours after your treatment.
what Areas can be treated?
PRP treatment can be performed on the face, neck, hands and all over the body with excellent results: skin is re-plumped and rejuvenated; fine lines and wrinkles are reduced and skin contours are redefined to create a youthful, radiant glow. It is successful in the treatment of areas such as:
Upper and lower eye area
Fine lines and wrinkles
Ageing and sagging skin
Acne scars
Neck & décolletage
Thinning hair
Is the treatment safe?
PRP treatment is the safest non-invasive procedure because you are using cells from your own body therefore there can be no allergic reaction.
Am I a candidate for PRP?
You may be considered a good candidate for this procedure if you’re in sound health and looking to treat minor signs of aging. It is an excellent treatment for those who want to treat fine lines and slight sagging on the lower part of the face (like the chin) and to treat laxity in the décolleté area, as well as cleavage crepiness.
It can also be used to treat acne scars and divots, cellulite, and even hair loss. Crow’s feet around the eye area can also be treated.
If you have any type of bleeding disorder or clotting problem, or if your platelets are low (thrombocytopenia), you may not be a candidate for this treatment.
It also may not be the best option for you if you:
are pregnant
use Accutane for acne
have certain skin conditions, such as facial eczema or rosacea
scar easily
have a history of poor wound healing
have undergone skin radiation in the last 12 months
You will be evaluated in the consultation by Dr. Kelleher to determine if you’re a good candidate for PRP.
What can I expect to see after treatment?
PRP treatment is a gradual process, so don’t worry if you don’t see any immediate results. After your first treatment visit, it may appear that the treatment worked immediately because of swelling from the watery ingredients of your plasma. In a few days, when the swelling goes down and the water is absorbed by your body, you will probably look as you did before your treatment. It can take four weeks for results to become apparent, with improvements seen around the six to 12 week mark. Most people report looking more refreshed and youthful, with a noticeable improvement in skin tone and texture. Overall, the results can last 12+ months.
Platelet Rich Plasma treatment takes time to gradually correct the texture and lines in your skin and results can be visible from 6-12 weeks after treatment. A course of treatments will be recommended over 12 months for optimum results.
Following a course of PRP injections results will typically last up to 1 year after the first treatment session in most patients. Touch-up treatments may be needed to maintain the desired effect depending on the extent of ageing and skin concerns.
What other treatments can i combine PRP with?
PRP can be used with additional rejuvenation treatments such as:
Microneedling
Dermal Fillers
Others. Just ask at your consultation
How is it made?
PRP facials are medical, rather than cosmetic procedures. Dr. Kelleher first takes a small sample of your blood.
A small amount of your own blood is processed in a high specialised, state of the art system, specifically designed to extract the PRP in a safe, clinical manner. This PRP serum, containing your own unique concentrate of platelets and tissue growth factors, is injected into areas of the face, neck, décolletage, hands and other skin areas that require rejuvenation.
PRP has been used in facials for the last few years to stimulate collagen production, but orthopaedic doctors have injected PRP to heal injured joints — typically ankles, knees and elbows — for many years.
It is the growth factors in PRP that help the body to heal.
